Is my multimeter broken?

I just bought a Gardner Bender multimeter at my local hardware store. I am not too experienced in this stuff, but I think something is wrong. When I try to read the voltage of a 9V battery, nothing happens. The screen always shows just a decimal point, no matter what I do. And yes, it is turned on, and it is on the right settings. Am I doing something wrong? Or is it just broken?
