Have you ever heard of a slugger promising a sick kid he'll hit a homer... and then fail?

No I haven't. But by far my favorite hitting of a home run for a sick kid was paul o'neil hitting two homeruns for the sick kid in seinfield. although it was fiction it still makes me laugh.
